Can You Move a Murphy Bed After It’s Installed?

Maybe you’ve found a new apartment, or the guest room is about to become a home office. Either way, if you own an Inovabed, you’re probably wondering whether your bed can come with you. The good news is that you can move a Murphy bed from Inovabed, and with most of our models, it’s easier than you might expect.

That’s because most of our wall beds don’t attach to the wall at all. Here’s what a move looks like for each model and where to find help along the way.

Most Inovabed Wall Beds Are Freestanding

Our Sofa Wall Bed, Extended Sofa Wall Bed, and Table Wall Bed are all freestanding. Once they’re assembled correctly, they stand on their own with no floor or wall mounting, and each one comes with an anti-tip strap as an added safety measure.

That’s what makes moving them so manageable. There’s no mounting hardware to unbolt from wall studs, and you won’t need to find studs in just the right spot in your new room. Both sofa models still open in one easy motion without removing a single cushion.

How to Move a Murphy Bed That Stands on Its Own

A freestanding wall bed is still a substantial piece of furniture, so plan the move instead of rushing it. Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Start with your model’s manual. Manuals for the Sofa Wall Bed, Extended Sofa Wall Bed, and Table Wall Bed are on our support page with assembly manuals. We support customers from purchase to build to disassembly when it’s time to move, so reach out before you take the mechanism apart.
  2. Clear the bed. Take off your bedding and mattress first. Our beds use a standard queen mattress up to 11 inches thick, and it moves separately from the frame.
  3. Release the anti-tip strap. Set it aside with your hardware so you can reattach it in the new room.
  4. Line up a helper. We recommend two people for most assembly steps, so plan on a second set of hands when it’s time to put the bed back together.
  5. Don’t forget the extras. If you’ve added a Lighting & USB Kit, PowerHub, Flex Wardrobe, bookcase, or nightstands, each has its own manual on the same page.

Once you’re in the new room, the baseboard notch on the back of our freestanding models (1 inch deep by 4 inches high) lets the bed sit flush against the wall even with existing baseboard. Then reattach the anti-tip strap for added safety.

Moving Our Standard Wall Bed Takes a Bit More Planning

Our standard Wall Bed is the one model in our lineup that mounts to the wall. Proper attachment is vital to safe operation, so moving it means detaching it from the wall in your current home and securing it again in the new one.

We include hardware for attaching the Wall Bed to standard wood wall studs. If your new room has a different wall or stud type, check the Wall Bed assembly manual for requirements before you pick a spot. The Wall Bed also needs to be installed flush to the wall, and its baseboard notch (1.5 inches deep by 6 inches high) makes room for existing baseboard so it can sit tight against the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving a Murphy Bed

Are wall beds and Murphy beds the same thing?

Yes. “Murphy bed” is the classic name that comes from the original patent, while we use “wall bed” to reflect how the design has evolved with smoother mechanisms, integrated sofas and desks, and freestanding construction. Whichever term you use, you’re talking about the same kind of bed.

How long does it take to set up a wall bed in a new home?

We estimate four to eight hours for assembly. Our support page also has assembly videos for the Table Wall Bed and Sofa Wall Bed, so you can follow along as you put the bed back together.

Can someone help me reinstall my wall bed after a move?

We’re building a network of dealers and professional installers. Right now, we can recommend installers in the New York City, Albany, Denver, and Orlando areas, and we also have retail partners you may be able to work with locally.

What if a part gets damaged or lost during the move?

Email our support team with a detailed description, your property location, your original order number and approximate purchase date if you know them, and photos of the bed’s front, left side, and right side taken from 3 to 5 feet away. That helps us speed up replacement parts.

Should I check anything once my wall bed is set up again?

We recommend a routine check of your bed once a year, and right after a move is a good time. Our Welcome Booklet, linked on the support page, covers how to operate the bed along with annual maintenance and care.

At Inovabed, we design and manufacture modern Murphy beds and space-saving furniture in Upstate New York, and we’re proudly certified as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business.
